Powerpoint: An Ode to the Medium

PowerPoint. What a misused and misunderstood tool. PowerPoint is still a powerful tool. When used properly, it can offer a visual stimulus to a boring lecture or discussion.

Unfortunately, the power of PowerPoint is regularly abused. Too often, I see PowerPoint used as a “crutch.” Teachers who don’t understand the material will use a PowerPoint class as their sole method of teaching a topic.

Sometimes teachers or instructors will show slides of nothing but text. So much unreadable text. Some instructors will read from the slide, insult their students’ intelligence, and never face their students at all.

Teachers must reduce the amount of text, insert pictures and other visual aids, and remember the origins of slides — manually changing them over a projector one at a time.

PowerPoint is a fantastic tool. Don’t abuse it.
